For those of us who subscribe to the “ branch theory” (that #Anglican Christianity has its own unique continuous line that runs alongside those of the #Orthodox and Roman #Catholic churches), we understand the Church of England as being the same body established by Pope Gregory, and is therefore the recipient of 1400+ years of heritage, only undergoing a kind of name change about 500 years ago (to quite oversimplify things).

"For most of her childhood, author Jennifer Moses didn’t feel a connection to #Judaism.

"Raised in the Waspy suburbs of Washington by an #Orthodox father who treated Judaism as his personal practice, she had no formal #Jewish education. Moses’ #Reform mother primarily engaged with her #Jewishness through social activities.

“I didn’t know an alef from a bet. I didn’t know the difference between #Talmud and #Torah,” said Moses. “Dad said we kept #kosher because we didn’t have ham in the house.”

It wasn’t until she stumbled upon #Yiddish literature that she really connected with her heritage — and began #writing Jewish #stories herself."

In Israel, the shared burden of military service in “the people’s army” is a consensus value, and an exemption granted the ultra-Orthodox has long rankled. Amid the mounting costs of war in Gaza, moves to codify the exemption have fanned resentments. #gaz #Israel #army #orthodox

The Christian Science Monitor · Amid Israel’s longest war, resentment grows over religious draft exemptionBy Dina Kraft

Not only is this already settled its even settled in the fucking article. NYTimes proves, once again, that journalism is dead.

"Questions of religious acceptance of cross-species #transplants came up at the Congress of the #Transplantation Society in Istanbul, where scholars from a variety of faiths met last year.

For #Jews, the short answer is a clear and unequivocal yes. It is one of the exceedingly rare instances in which the maxim “two Jews, three opinions” does not apply.

“It’s 100 percent permitted,” even for the most observant and #Orthodox Jews, said Rabbi Pamela Barmash, a professor of Hebrew Bible and biblical Hebrew at Washington University in St. Louis."

The New York Times · Pig Organ Transplants May Pose a Dilemma for Some Jews and MuslimsBy Roni Caryn Rabin
Church of St. Cosmas and Damian, Anusin, Poland

It is a wooden Orthodox church built between 1902 and 1904 on the site of an older church dating back to the late 18th century. It serves as the parish church for the Telatycze parish and is a typical example of log architecture from the southern Podlasie region. The church has a three-part structure with a three-story tower above the vestibule, an octagonal drum, and a characteristic onion-shaped dome covering the roof.

The interior of the church features an eclectic iconostasis from the early 20th century, containing icons of Baroque character. An unusual element of the decoration is the Stations of the Cross hanging on the side walls, which are rarely found in Orthodox churches. Around the church grounds, there is a stone slab with a mysterious, partially faded inscription combining Cyrillic and Greek alphabet characters, as well as a baptismal font located near a nearby stream.

This years war on Christmas opening salvo 🤡

"Footage appears to show teenagers wearing #kippot and #tzitzit removing stones from the hillside cross, which is believed to have been there for half a century, and using these to build the #Jewish symbol nearby. Adults who were apparently part of the group appear not to have intervened. The incident took place below the #GreatOrme summit in #Llandudno, north #Wales – a popular holiday destination for #Orthodox #Jews over many decades.

Footage of the incident was widely shared on social media, with anger from local residents. Unfortunately other responses included the claim that “The Star of David is the Rotchild [sic] family symbol and they made the #Israeli govt take the #menorah off the flag and replace with their family symbol”, “This is nothing compared to what they are doing in #Gaza”, “There’s a reason the whole world has historically always hated them”, and “They are just a stain on the world…always have been.”

"#Yeshivat Chovevei Torah — an all-male #Orthodox #Jewish #rabbinical #school in #Riverdale, #NewYork — has ordained its first out #gay #rabbi, Tadhg Cleary.

Cleary’s June 12 ordination ceremony came six years after the school refused to ordain another gay student whose public wedding engagement went viral online, Forward reported. The head rabbi who refused to ordain the gay student, Rabbi Dov Linzer, gave his blessing for Cleary’s ordination, calling him “an enormous [Torah scholar] who is God-fearing, scrupulous in his observance and happens to be gay.”

“We want to be giving semicha to him for the totality of who he is, not to turn him into a symbol or a statement,” Linzer said. “If we were interested in making a statement, you would have heard about it from us first.”

Greek parish I sometimes go by is having unction followed by paraklesis tonight, might go.

Also have to learn a pile of new music for a paraklesis on Sunday. Men's choir doing Archbishop Job's Carpatho-Rusyn setting, completely unfamiliar since I didn't join his men's choir back in the day. Only 80% chance I'll show up, but I'll try. #orthodox

Now, that is real fucking comedy gold right there.

We made it up, WOCKA WOCKA! :fozzie_wocka_wocka:

"Two #Jewish #comedians whose #Edinburgh #Fringe shows were cancelled say the decision appeared to have been made on an incorrect pretext.

Rachel Creeger and Philip Simon told Times Radio that the #WhistleBinkies venue told them the cancellation was linked to a “vigil for #IDF #soldiers” held during Creeger’s performance last year, something the venue later admitted had not happened.

Creeger, #Britain’s only touring #comedian who is also a practising #Orthodox #Jew, explained: “They initially said that they believed we’d held a vigil for an IDF soldier, a fallen soldier, which is a thing that just hadn’t ever happened in either of our shows. The shows are not political, we’re not political performers and the IDF is not a relevant subject in either show.

“They later withdrew that and said they understood that that didn’t actually happen."

The Times · Jewish comics claim fringe shows dropped on mistaken pretextBy Charlie Moloney

If conscience is the voice of God, how can we not try to hear it more often, unless we love God? Such people try to learn many things, but they do not want to know the most important things, and this is a temptation. Such people are helped by demons to be "believers" in quotation marks! But as soon as a person wants to live by purifying their conscience, they will encounter many sorrows on their path.
