Some hedge laying on the nature reserve before and afters. Good fun and we were quite well sheltered on a very stormy day. #HedgeLaying #Nature #Conservation #RestoreNatureNow
@NatureMC That’s very worrying to hear and matches with every citizen science wildlife count and study I’ve seen this year.
We are living through worrying times. We have far less bird activity and noise around. Insect count numbers have plummeted.
My own frame of reference is the allotments.
People comment how lovely and quiet it is but they are only talking of getting away from the traffic noise. Nature’s silence should be screaming at us. #BiodiversityLoss #Birds #Insects #RestoreNatureNow
Last Thursday’s conservation work in the nature reserve. The area next to one of the ponds was cut back and cleared to promote new growth. It was all piled up inside the apex of trees to provide an area of wildlife habitat and to start composting. #NatureReserve #Nature #Biodiversity #ClimateAction #RestoreNatureNow
@KeithDJohnson Brilliant stuff. Here’s to millions and millions more Earth smiles in dry lands everywhere. #RestoreNatureNow #ClimateAction #Permaculture #SoilHealth #RainwaterCatchment
Ernie’s tired but still keen to go a bit further.
It’s great to see the wildflowers coming up in the verges and grassed banks locally.
They are now given time to grow in areas that used to be mown several times a year.

Some great articles in the latest issue of BTO News including one from CEO Juliet Vickery on the reasons for joining other organisations at the Restore Nature Now rally in London back in June
Was it really as a long ago as June?

A very damp bumblebee who stopped out all night on a cardoon flower. No idea what species this is, it's very black. The cardoon plant is way too big for my garden, reaching over 7 feet tall. At the first storm it toppled over and there is masses of material to chop for composting, but it is a magnet for bumbles.

@BroadforkForVictory At the allotment insect numbers are down, but still more numerous than in my partly rewilded garden. I put this down to my neighbour who sprays everything with pesticides and herbicides. These chemicals should be banned from general public use as a first step. See my bio pic.

Took a trip to Wakehurst in Sussex to see their Prairie meadows. On the lawn they have planted what the are calling " meadow bombs", small areas of different plantings. The first pic is the pictorial meadow type and the second is a more natural meadow with achillea and long grass. The less visually impactful had many more insects and a greater diversity of insect types. So, yes, the first is loved by bees but the second is much more useful to a wider range of insects.

I went on a short wall to a small piece of parkland locally known as the dog walkers field. And it was full of knapweed, clover and a good mix of grasses. And subsequently full of bees and butterflies and crickets. This is an area that the council do not mow on a regular basis, allowing insects to complete their life cycle. Such a simple low cost solution to

My little allotment mate here to thank all of you that voted against the party that has neglected/harmed her and her fellow creatures but would ask you to keep up the pressure on the incoming government to #RestoreNatureNow
I was one of many who complained Here’s the standard response “Many marches take place around the UK every day, and unfortunately it isn’t possible to cover each one…” #bbc #RestoreNatureNow https://www.bbc.co.uk/contact/complaint/bbcnewsrestorenaturenow
Our local bird enthusiast has posted that 65 to 75 swifts seen over our housing estate yesterday evening. A record for the area and credited to his neighbour who has installed swift boxes. Something to cheer about.

For flock's sake!
XR Oxford flew our motley flock, led by Karla the Kingfisher at Restore Nature Now yesterday.
Over 300 organisations and an estimated 100,00 marchers came together to demand:
* A pay rise for nature
* Make polluters pay
* More space for nature
* A right to a healthy environment
* Fair and effective climate action

#GretaThunberg is far from the only #neurodivergent #ClimateActivist – many who see the world differently also want to change it

"Amid her calls for governments to act on climate change, Swedish activist Greta Thunberg has spoken openly about her Asperger’s syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder. She is not the only environmental campaigner to speak about being neurodivergent (having a neurological condition or disability) – something Thunberg describes as her 'superpower'.
"In the UK, naturalists #ChrisPackham and #DaraMcAnulty have both discussed their autism. Packham has said that it has been 'enormously beneficial' to his career.
"In my doctoral research, I interviewed 23 youth activists, conservation workers and environmentalists to examine the link between nature experiences and mental health in an era of climate breakdown. My findings shed light on the motivations and intentions of neurodivergent people who work in the environmental and conservation sector, as well as those who are drawn to climate activism.
"Many of my participants had been diagnosed with mental health, psychiatric and neurological conditions including autism, #ADHD and #bipolar disorder. They reported finding community and a sense of purpose in the #environmental #activism movement and through a connection with #nature."

Wonderful moment during #RestoreNatureNow when we met the Dyke March coming in the opposite direction and joined in chants of solidarity together.
