One of the constant recurring topics on social media are stories of someone saying they don’t wash their legs, or they don’t use a washcloth, or they don’t take showers for a week. I wrote about why those stories always blow up. https://www.anildash.com/2025/05/29/who-is-clean/
@anildash You trying to be a blogger now?
@gruber I’M BACK, BABY
@anildash who washes the washmen?
@anildash love that you still managed to work Prince into that one
@anildash Interesting. What would be your advice for a person who thinks themselves a white allie and also thinks cleanliness is overemphasised in our culture? Just shut up about it?
@ristkof I think if there’s something valuable to add, then the conversation is always welcome. It’s just been a long time since I’ve seen something new there.
@anildash And not sure I have something valuable to add. To me the idea that this may be part of white privilege is new, and I see and acknowledge your point.
@anildash I save myself from this discourse by strictly living in a human-size boil-in-the-bag container.
@anildash What the actual fuck did I just read?
@mmm_kay I have no idea? Why are you in my replies fussing about it?
@anildash "who gets to be unclean" is a framing that hit me like a brick. That's very good.
Recently I was talking with friends on Slack, joking really, about what a weird ritual communion is. One of my Jewish friends responded, simply, "we go out of our way to make sure nobody thinks we ritually drink blood, but gentiles brag about doing it."

Very first time hearing about this.
@anildash This is also why resistance to COVID protective measures has gotten tangled up with white supremacy. Being told they could be spreading disease is an insult - their Whiteness should be protection enough.
