@Amynearlyknowledgeable Beautifully written piece on moonlore with many references to ancient beliefs & practices.
"In #Shropshire, there is a particular focus on the changing phases of the #moon, and the potential power they hold. For example, on the first sight of the #NewMoon, it was customary to greet it with three curtseys and with each curtsey one must spin around. If one completes this ritual, they could expect a gift before the next new moon."
@Amynearlyknowledgeable Question about, "on the first sight of the New moon".
A #NewMoon is generally understood as being the #night or so when the #Moon is in the direction of the #Sun, making it unlit & dark to us. In these legends, are the folks looking at an invisible moon, or at the first sliver of the next lunar phase (which sounds very cool)? The first sliver seems likely, but maybe people could see the moon even when it was dark. "You saw the whole of the moon."
Lovely writing.
