But this week I listened to the Verge’s interview with Obsidian CEO Steph “kepano” Ango and decided to take another look at Obsidian. And I like it. I think I’ll stick with it.

https://www.theverge.com/decoder-podcast-with-nilay-patel/760522/obsidian-ceo-steph-ango-kepano-productivity-software-notes-app

So what are the major advances in Obsidian since October? What else?

What am I likely to have forgotten in my 10 months wandering in exile?

Yes, I know I can answer these questions by exploring the documentation, forums and various communities. And I plan to do that. But I also think it might be fun to have this discussion here. We’re not comfortable with the idea that our users’ data could be stored in OpenAI servers without their consent. I think a lot of tools out there are just kind of defaulting to this feeling that there’s an arms race. We’ve got to put AI into everything. Let’s put a little magic button everywhere. I don’t think that’s us. We want to give users confidence that their thoughts are theirs, that things are not going to be used to train the next LLM.

#Obsidian

mitten
Yesterday was a good computer day - I finally got around to tidying up the SSH situation between my desk computer and my laptop, and it worked great. I felt very grown up and competent.

Today, not so much. Realized I need to revive a database of mine that's currently in Airtable, and I thought, ooh, maybe I can put it in #Obsidian but alas no. Tried the Airtable plugin - it doesn't work, just pulls in the title and nothing else. Tried the import JSON/CSV plugin, and it doesn't work either. It doesn't even create any files at all.

So much for feeling competent. (And yes, I'm giving up and going back to Airtable because at least it works.) Sigh.

We're considering ways that IT departments can more confidently deploy #Obsidian to employees and students. What do you think about this approach?

1. New policy.json file with options for disabling community plugins, themes, Sync, Publish
2. Command line options for --policy-file "path/to/policy.json"
3. Command line options for --policy-json "{json contents}"
4. Environment variable for OBSIDIAN_POLICY_FILE and OBSIDIAN_POLICY_JSON same as the command line options

The new Base functionality in #Obsidian is great. Editing (YAML) properties of a markdown file from a table is empowering.

Very straightforward design as I got it going and was useful in under 5 minutes with no documentation.
