The Umbra of #Earth

During the Sept 7/8 #lunar #eclipse, the #Moon passed through Earth's dark umbra. A timelapse from China shows its curved shadow across the Moon. The red tint during totality is due to sunlight scattered by Earth's atmosphere, while a blue limb occurs as ozone in the stratosphere scatters red light. Totality lasted 83 minutes.

A recent paper from Daniella Billi of the University of Rome Tor Vergata , published in pre-print form in Acta Astronautica, reviews how one particular extremophile fills the role of both useful test subject and useful tool all at once.

Yesterday's lunar eclipse was very special because it also took place during a phenomenon called a blood moon. I was very lucky – I was on the outskirts of Leszno, where visibility was very good. These may not be the most beautiful photos I have ever taken, as I am not an expert in astrophotography, but this moment was definitely worth capturing. In the following photos, you will see the subsequent phases of the eclipse. At the end, there was a very large difference in the illumination of the two sides of the Moon, so I decided to take a photo of only the illuminated side.
