@ClareBear #UBI is sort of like the duct tape of social justice. It's not the perfect or elegant solution, and it doesn't solve some of the deep stuff, but it makes a tangible difference -- immediately -- to the people who need it most.

Although I’m talking about many decades ago, I once believed the lies about welfare fraud — it does occur, but it’s occurence is lost in the overwhelming numbers who do the right thing and deserve support. I believed it until I experienced what it was like to look for work and the mental stress it caused over a long period. I was lucky to escape the downward spiral — manly due to some exceptional people who came into my life. And while I refused to collect benefits (for some illogical idealism), most cannot because they have a family to support and have to pay for basic human needs (shelter, food, health, and a sense of purpose).

Bring on Universal Basic Income I say and do away with the hypocracy of bureaucratic benefit systems altogether. This is about the greater social good after all.

@blaine not to mention that this kind of system is trying to catch very much a minority of people, yes it represents significant money. But it's the old cookie tale, look the immigrants are trying to steal your cookie! But don't look at me taking the whole pack of it.

the only way you get a UBI is to participate

if you withhold your participation until you get what you want, right now, rather than slow plodding boring iterative progress, you only make sure the chance of a UBI is zero

Ironically, my income was most stable during the pandemic. Relief funds for gig workers meant 2 steady payments a month—spent on rent, bills, savings, & debt reduction. Since then, lurching from client to client has been exhausting & a waste of my talent. The hustle takes real energy & exacts a cost—on creativity, health, & what I can offer the world. As for healthcare, my plan? Flossing and prayer. But at least Bezo owns a superyacht valued at appx $500m, amirite?

Universal Basic Services is no alternative to Universal Basic Income. Both are needed. UBI reduces the strain on public services. Resources put into education goes further.
