History of Art<p>February 23 - the birthday of British Symbolist painter George Frederic Watts (1817-1904). Watts became famous in his lifetime for his allegorical works, such as Hope and Love and Life. These paintings were intended to form part of an epic symbolic cycle called the "House of Life", in which the emotions and aspirations of life would all be represented in a universal symbolic language.</p><p><a href="https://stellar-art.pixels.com/featured/hope-1886-george-frederic-watts-1817-1904.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">stellar-art.pixels.com/feature</span><span class="invisible">d/hope-1886-george-frederic-watts-1817-1904.html</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/Art" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Art</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/ArtHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ArtHistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/ArtistBirthday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ArtistBirthday</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/Symbolism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Symbolism</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/symbolist" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>symbolist</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/hope" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hope</span></a></p>

History of Art<p>The Chariot of Apollo and the Dragon (1907) by French <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/Symbolist" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Symbolist</span></a> artist Odilon Redon (1840-1916).<br>Odilon Redon often returned to the ancient myth of Apollo in his sun chariot with the writhing coils of a snake below, revealing the pervasive influence of Eugene Delacroix. But Redon infuses his rendering of the subject with an air of dreamlike calm, in keeping with his preference in his mature works to maintain a sense of ambiguity. </p><p><a href="https://stellar-art.pixels.com/featured/1-the-chariot-of-apollo-and-the-dragon-1907-odilon-redon.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">stellar-art.pixels.com/feature</span><span class="invisible">d/1-the-chariot-of-apollo-and-the-dragon-1907-odilon-redon.html</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/art" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>art</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/ArtHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ArtHistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/mythology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mythology</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/ancient" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ancient</span></a></p>

He lived in <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/Vienna" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Vienna</span></a>, a crossroads of East and West, and he drew on sources such as Byzantine art, Mycenaean metalwork, Persian rugs and miniatures, the mosaics of the Ravenna churches, and Japanese screens.</p><p><a href="https://stellar-art.pixels.com/featured/music-gustav-klimt.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">stellar-art.pixels.com/feature</span><span class="invisible">d/music-gustav-klimt.html</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/arthistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>arthistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/ArtistBirthday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ArtistBirthday</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/ArtNouveau" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ArtNouveau</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/Symbolism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Symbolism</span></a></p>
History of Art<p>The Gothic Window (1900) is one of many images <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/French" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>French</span></a> artist Odilon Redon painted of profile figures with flowers. The woman embodies his conception of <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/spiritual" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>spiritual</span></a> life and suggests a <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/meditative" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>meditative</span></a> state often found in <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/Symbolist" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Symbolist</span></a> painting. Eastern schools of thought also influenced Redon, and the floating cluster of flowers may be intended as Buddhist symbols of pure spirit and beauty. </p><p><a href="https://stellar-art.pixels.com/featured/1-the-gothic-window-1900-odilon-redon.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">stellar-art.pixels.com/feature</span><span class="invisible">d/1-the-gothic-window-1900-odilon-redon.html</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/art" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>art</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/arthistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>arthistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/France" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>France</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/Symbolism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Symbolism</span></a></p>
