#ScribesAndMakers 2025.08.22 — Do you have a favorite texture? If so, can you describe it? CW: Maybe a little intimate?

Synchronicity? Perhaps, but my MC Bolt, a day angel, today got a chance to feel the inside webbing of the wing of a night angel (resembles a bat wing) with her fingers. She remarked:

The red dusted black velvet was courser than it appeared, most of it downy hair; the rest was stubby burnished red waveguides that sparkled [because] they were a metallic fuzz no longer than a man's five day beard—which had the best feel as far as I was concerned, the type you could nuzzle and rub your cheeks in. Similar, probably; no, I didn't—!

For me, velvet. 😛

Chapter 7 - "Sierra Lament"

The HDR Liberator arrives at the planet Sierra Lament, just outside of Republic space. A vanguard team make planetfall, aware of the limitations of the atmosphere. This also has a serious limitation to their defence in that ballistic firearms risk setting fire to the people using them, and so they have to use alternatives. Voight also gets her first insight into how Hanna's gift works.

So last night I finished the #book Autonomous by Anna Lee Newitz. Super neat cyberpunk-themed book focused on a pirate who copies patented pharmaceuticals to ensure everyone can access needed treatments, but also covering the autonomy and lack thereof of both humans and robots in a world where both can face indenture if they lack the financial means to escape it.

I initially wanted something not dystopian and was taken by the sea-fairing patent-violating piracy, but then as more of the legal structure of this 22nd century world was revealed, it was clearly very dystopian. Brilliant writing and a creepily realistic political environment!

What people are saying about The Measurement Problem:

"a rich narrative that delivers a deep sci-fi whodunit—layered with unexpected twists, philosophical depth, and a compelling blend of science and mystery."

"This is the kind of book that has you gripped for the entire ride, and then resonating with ideas and thoughts and ideas for days afterwards"

QSFer S.M. Stiles has a new queer cyberpunk book out (bi, gay): The Heart of the Syndicate.

Synclare “Sync” Thornwryght is just one of the Twenty-One crime syndicate heirs. He’s the weakest, the angriest, and the one most likely to fade into obscurity because no one knows what he really wants in life-and he really doesn’t care. Maybe no ...
