When I Leave the World Behind : Queline Meadows

this year’s top winner in the #InternetArchive #PublicDomainDay Film Remix Contest. These remarkable films not only reimagined and transformed public domain works but also demonstrated the boundless potential of remixing creative works to create something new.

All on-screen text comes from public domain books, periodicals, and sheet music. The music is Henry Burr’s 1915 recording of Irving Berlin's “When I Leave the World Behind.”

Well it's been over a year since the copyright on Mickey Mouse/Steamboat Willie expired, and it has been a big ole nothing burger. Disney doesn't care, nobody cares. No significant new work of creativity using the character has gained any particular funding or attention.

Are people still scared that Disney will find some excuse to sue them out of existence? Or is there an underlying idea of "plagarism" that goes beyond copyright? Maybe folks don't want to make new Steamboat Willie cartoons because there's nothing new or exciting to be seen there.

Good Books Now In The Public Domain

In addition to being the first day of the New Year, January 1 is also known as Public Domain Day, when titles previously under copyright enter the public domain in many countries, including the U.S.

This year’s titles include a host of good books by some authors you might have heard of including William Faulkner, Earnest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, Dashiell Hammett, Thomas Wolfe, Sinclair Lewis, Edith Wharton and Mahatma Gandhi among others.

Standard EBOOKS is celebrating by providing links to twenty of the titles available to download in different formats that should work with most ebook readers.

These book titles, were first published in 1929. I won’t get into the length of copyrights and all the issues surrounding that, but instead say this is an interesting collection of works, some early or first works by some of the authors listed above.

Keep in mind that on Public Domain Day a number of titles in other media also entered the public domain. Duke University publishes a more extensive, but not complete list that includes titles of plays, movies, characters, music compositions, art,  and sound recordings. The date for sound recordings is 1924 and includes Rhapsody In Blue by George Gershwin.

You can find more of my writings on a variety of topics on Medium at this link, including in the publications Ellemeno and Rome. I can also be found on social media under my name as above.

Public Domain Day 2025

The works of the Austrian writer Fritz von Herzmanovsky-Orlando, of the Jewish Austrian writer and left activist Leo Katz, of the French linguist Lucien Tesnière (inventor of dependency grammar) and of many, many others are now in public domain.

The list contains an impressive compendium of human knowledge and creativity.

More highlights from @publicdomainrev:

"On this year's Public Domain Day (which falls each January 1st) we welcome, in lots of countries around the world, the works of two titans of 20th-century art, Frida Kahlo and Henri Matisse, and in the US a handful of seminal books including William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury, Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One's Own, and Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms."
