"The reason why microwaves heat the food but not the bowl is because they work at the resonant frequency of water" IS A MYTH.

Microwave ovens operate at a frequency of 2.45 GHz (2.45x109 Hz) and this is NOT the resonant frequency of a water molecule. This frequency is much lower than the diatomic molecule resonant frequencies mentioned earlier. If 2.45 GHz were the resonant frequency of water molecules the microwaves would all be absorbed in the surface layer of a substance (liquid water or food) and so the interior of the food would not get cooked at all.

holy shit our microwave is fuckin haunted

i heard a noise in the kitchen and noticed the microwave going off with nothing in it

and like it just kept going even tho the timer said zero. and if you opened the door it'd stop but when you closed it it'd start again

and none of the buttons would do anything

AND EVEN UNPLUGGING IT AND PLUGGING IT BACK IN DID NOTHING

it's possessed lol

Made it back to my workplace of 10 years ago for their 10th annual NEON festival. NEON in this case stands for New Energy Of Norfolk (Virginia). Since I left there, the Chrysler Museum Glass Studio has expanded, tripling in size.

They still have their daily noon demos and my friends Heather Sutherland and @AbbeyfuckingDivens asked if I wanted to be a part of today's demo. I was able to test out their new manifold cart on wheels and with a microwave I picked up a the local thrift store, light up some blown glass work that Heather made all while hot.

Their new cart has a much nicer manifold than the one I put together over 10 years ago. The Amphitheater hotshop is also much nicer. The public and studio team were dazzled by my race agains the clock, "do it all while hot an clean" performance- all packaged up into an educational 1 hour demo. What fun!

@Sheep_Overboard Sir Mark Oliphant: “was engaged on two vital wartime projects: radar and the atom bomb.

The first #radar installations, which used long wavelengths (10 metres or more) to detect enemy aeroplanes, lacked precision and the equipment was too cumbersome to carry in an aircraft; an operating wavelength of 10 centimetres became the target. He laboured to improve the klystron—the thermionic valve which was thought to be the key—but more development was needed.

With Oliphant’s enthusiastic support, his Birmingham colleague #JohnRandall and a research student, #HenryBoot, developed the cavity magnetron, a valve that produced an extraordinary 10 kilowatts of #microwave power at 10 centimetres wavelength. This led to the birth of #AirborneRadar and the development of the much-improved radar systems that played a crucial role in the #Allied victory.”

#MarkOliphant / #Adelaide / #Australia <adb.anu.edu.au/biography/oliph> the technical details behind the story:

“Nowhere in the world in 1939 was there a working, #pulsed, #cavity #magnetron capable of generating 10 kW or more peak power at wavelengths of 10 cm or less, which had a compact portable size, used a small permanent magnet and which was readily capable of being manufactured at scale. This was the design breakthrough achieved at #BirminghamUniversity.”

There is a company called Prepology that makes all sorts of wonderful cooking equipment for the microwave. I already have their grill, sandwich maker, and hot dog maker. They also have a grill for breakfast, but even they say it can be used for all sorts of other things, including meatloaf, lasagna, etc. I've used the grill to make chicken breast, and plan on trying veal cutlets, pork chops, cheeseburgers, salmon, and grilled cheese. These are not pre-made foods that are being warmed up but are being cooked from scratch. Mom found them on QVC, but I'm sure they're sold elsewhere as well. I thought some of you might find this interesting. It could be especially useful for my blind peers. I really wish they would use that in their marketing and also sell these at blind-specific sites.

@seabass Certainly it'll need to be like a boxed-shut thing with a laser-safe safety door that filters the laser down to merely allow checking for alignment.

But yeah, this can solve the lack of #roasting a traditional #microwave has and be more precise than a #Salamander espechally when it comes to presenting stuff, like precisely browning cheese...
