TITLE: STAT+: Epic’s AI overhaul promises to address EHR headaches for clinicians and patients

URL: statnews.com/2025/08/20/epic-e

Epic CEO Judy Faulkner took to the stage at the company’s sci-fi-themed annual customer meeting Tuesday in a lavender wig, bright green glasses, and silver pants. In the spirit of “making science fiction science fact,” she announced several new artificial intelligence features the electronic health records system giant will be integrating into its software.

New additions introduced by Faulkner and others include an AI scribe powered by Microsoft to rival products from health tech unicorns like Abridge, and AI assistants targeted at doctors, patients, and administrative staff. The updates promise to address common headaches like the hours doctors spend on clinical documentation and the difficulty patients face getting answers about their care.

With more than 40% of the EHR market for hospitals, Epic’s approach to AI reflects its dominance. It kept a relatively low profile while others raced to edge out the competition with announcements for back-office coding tools, physician co-pilots, armies of voice AI agents, and more. Second largest EHR vendor Oracle Health has for almost a year touted a refreshed “AI-native” EHR, reupping its announcement ahead of Epic’s annual meeting. On Monday, AI scribe platform Ambience announced a new Epic-specific EHR navigation AI agent built on OpenAI’s new GPT-5 large language model.

TITLE: Opinion: AI should come with green, yellow, and red lights for mental health

URL: statnews.com/2025/08/20/chatbo

Mental health treatment is expensive and hard to find, so it’s no surprise that people looking for empathy and care are turning to large language models like ChatGPT and Claude. Researchers are exploring and validating tailored artificial intelligence solutions to deliver evidence-based psychotherapies. Just recently, Slingshot AI, an a16z-backed company, launched “Ash,” marketing it as the first public AI-powered therapy service.

It makes sense that people find it easier to turn to the chatbot on their phones and web browsers than a human — if you woke up anxious in the middle of the night and needed to talk to someone, would you wake your partner, kids, or friends? Or would you turn to the 24/7 companion in your pocket?

Like any conscientious health policy PhD student, Paige Nong went to the doctor for her free annual well visit.

But as she checked in, the person at the front desk said something that made her anxious. “Just so you know, don’t discuss any problems while you’re in the room,” she recalled the receptionist saying. “Because if you do, we’ll change the visit to an office visit and you’ll get charged for it.”

TITLE: How AI scribes could usher in higher medical bills

Artificial intelligence companies in the health care sector claim that their products, such as ambient scribes, can help physicians cut down on administrative tasks and allow them to spend more time caring for their patients. Ambient scribes use AI to record a patient’s doctor visit, document it, and then enter details of the conversation into the patient’s electronic health record. But as my STAT colleague Brittany Trang points out in a new story, use of these AI scribes may lead to higher medical bills.

In this week’s installment of STATus Report, Trang joins host Alex Hogan to discuss the counterintuitive reason these AI tools could be making health care even more expensive in the U.S.

TITLE: In a new era, glucose sensors straddle the line between medical device and wellness tool

URL: statnews.com/2025/08/20/dexcom

For years, blood glucose sensors have straddled the line between wellness and medicine. While most continuous glucose monitors are still found on the arms of people with diabetes, helping to dose insulin and catch dangerous overnight dips in glucose, a small batch of companies have quietly been prescribing them off-label, using the data streams to nudge users into habits that promote metabolic health and weight loss.

Then last summer, both Dexcom and Abbott began selling continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) without a prescription for about $100 a month, making it possible for any adult to monitor their blood glucose in real time, diabetes or not. As some startups begin selling over-the-counter CGMs directly to users alongside their apps, the tension between wellness and medicine has come into stark relief.
