The 1st Monday in October is #WorldArchitectureDay! #Hadrian designed the #Pantheon so it would cast sunlight on him as he entered its doors at the #Solstice and #Equinox. He and #Antinous could stand under the oculus ... the eye of the cosmos ... the most spiritual architectural element of all. The autumn equinox coincides with the Buddhist observance of 'Shūki Higan-e' (秋季彼岸会), when offerings are made at family graves.
Because of this the flower has, for many, come to symbolise the afterlife.
A new, daily work in progress
An Equinox walk at sunset
The Noose
As mud clings to my boots
As May Hill's silhouette fades in twilight
As a train skirts the opposite bank
As burnished clouds hover
As cows graze the shoreline
As rocks catch the evening’s glow
As night follows day
Autumn begins

A new, daily work in progress
An Equinox walk between sunrise at Garden Cliff and sunset at The Noose
The River hesitates as Autumn begins

A new, daily work in progress
An Equinox walk of 438 paces at sunrise at Garden Cliff
As darkness gives way
As black transitions to gold then blue
As Sun slowly emerges
As lights from nearby settlements are briefly held on the waters surface
As morning’s clear and cloudless sky, is perforated by nattering geese
The River remains motionless

An Equinox walk from Dawn to Dusk.
Garden Cliff to The Noose
As day follows night and night follows day, so Autumn begins

Less well known are the summer and winter versions of ohagi, available around the solstices.
Seasonal names for ohagi:spring = botamochi (牡丹餅 'peony')
summer = yofune (夜舟 'night boat')
autumn = ohagi (御萩 'bush clover')
winter = kita-mado (北窓 'northern window')

This year, the season of autumn arrived on 22 September, but the actual equinox in the UK occurred at 19:19 BST, so the sun had already set.
That meant the first sunrise and sunset of autumn happened the day after on 23 September.
I didn't manage to catch the first sunrise of the new season, but I did capture the first sunset.
This was the view this from Sunderland's Noble's Quay on the banks of the River Wear in North East England.
Love how at the spring and autumnal equinox the sun sets behind Wearmouth Bridge from this viewpoint.

Botamochi and ohagi are popular during the equinoctial weeks, when they are made as sacred offerings and enjoyed as tasty snacks.
Glutinous rice is soaked, cooked and formed into a ball. Around this ball a thick sweet bean paste is packed on.
Week-long services called Higan-e (彼岸会) are held at temples.
It is usual for people first to listen to sermons and then visit family graves.
Whereas 'Spring Higan' (春彼岸) typically shows gratitude for all living things, 'Autumn Higan' (秋彼岸) gives thanks to the dead.
Last day of summer VS first day of autumn : #equinox near #LikaLodge
Summer: We went for an excursion in Zrmanja gorge & a swim in gorgeous (!) river
Autumn: all human guests are gone - time for puh (dormouse) to reclaim the lodge for itself ; I plucked wild fruit & cooked compot :)
Exclusively celebrated by the Japanese Buddhist sects, Higan is not simply a time for visiting graves, but rather a time to think about ancestors, a time for families to come together at their local temples, listen to autumn sermons and contemplate their own faith.
