Interesting. Looking for something else, I realized I may have a "before" photo of the Alaska Airlines #AS1282 accident plane at the Renton #KRNT factory before its first flight, painting and delivery. 9 weeks after delivery it experienced the door blowout on departure from Portland #KPDX on January 5, 2024. The plane returned safely to PDX. I took this picture Oct 18, 2023, which fits the timeline for the plane's delivery to Alaska on Oct 31. #aviation #travel #avgeek

Unpainted green Boeing 737 MAX9 at Renton Municipal Airport, the location of the Boeing 737 assembly lines. At the time, it seemed nothing special except to get a view of my visit to the Boeing Renton factory site. The pre-painted rudder indicates it was going to Alaska Airlines. Based on the timing of ~10-12 days to paint a new Boeing 737 this fits with the delivery on October 31, 2023. So I think this could be the accident airplane of Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 which had the door blowout over Portland, Oregon on January 5, 2024. The plane was painted with a manufacturer-temporary tail number. More precise markings such as a line number are not in view. This view is looking at the wrong side for the emergency exit door plug that blew out on AS1282. But there is an identical one on this side. Both are behind the wings. In this view, the plane has not yet had its first flight. (New planes do not return to Renton, to make room for more more off the assembly line.) But the work and faulty re-installation of the left-side door plug had already been done. Without the bolts to hold the door plug, this plane was already in condition for that accident to occur. Fortunately, it returned safely to Portland and everyone survived. I wasn't watching at the time because I was busy having just gotten my place that day. And it was after sunset. #Avgeek alert: Icelandair flew their 757-200 special livery "Vatnajökull" from Reykjavik #KEF / #BIKF today on a ferry flight number to Kansas City #MCI / #KMCI. The airframe TF-FIR doesn't have a return flight scheduled. All of Icelandair's 757s are planned for retirement by Spring 2026. So it may have been retired or sold. But MCI isn't a boneyard. #PhotoOfTheDay is my best shot of the retirement flight of the space shuttle Endeavor on its way to its new home in Los Angeles in September, 2012. It didn't fly over San Jose where I was, so this was their closest approach that I could capture with my zoom lens. It was cool to see the shuttle carried along with my own eyes though... Chase plane behind.
