Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"Commercial surveillance allows buyers to figure out the most an individual consumer will pay, and raise prices accordingly; and to calculate the lowest wage a worker will accept, and lower pay accordingly. Commercial surveillance allows companies to "optimize" their products to be nearly so enshtitified that we quit them, but not quite, maximizing the value they can shift from us to them.</p><p>To be free people, we don't merely need to be ungovernable.</p><p>We need to become unoptomizable.</p><p>How do we do that? Well, there are lots of policies that would make it harder for the ultra-rich to "optimize" us so that we are easier to fleece and abuse, but every "optimization" starts with surveillance. After all, you treasure what you measure, and if you can't observe a worker or a customer – or a citizen getting ready to build a guillotine – you can't optimize them.</p><p>That's where "privacy first" comes in. There are a lot of people angry about a lot of problems that are all rooted in the unregulated, unrestricted practice of mass surveillance by governments and their corporate partners:"</p><p><a href="https://pluralistic.net/2025/08/20/billionaireism/#surveillance-infantalism" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">pluralistic.net/2025/08/20/bil</span><span class="invisible">lionaireism/#surveillance-infantalism</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Surveillance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Surveillance</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Monopolies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Monopolies</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Competition" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Competition</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Antitrust" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Antitrust</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Privacy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Privacy</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/MassPrivacy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MassPrivacy</span></a></p>
Mary Austin VOTED 4 HARRIS!<p>"I met Roger Alford once, a few months ago at a conference. He’s a no-doubt conservative who served in both <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Trump" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Trump</span></a> administrations, yet he is cursed with having a sense of right and wrong. Eric Darnley Small<p>The corruption continues. If you are surprised, you have not been paying attention:</p><p>Former Trump DOJ official Roger Alford is speaking out after being fired for resisting pay-to-play corruption, exposing what he calls the “rule of lobbyists” overtaking antitrust enforcement. In a recent speech and op-ed, Alford accused senior DOJ staffers—namely Chad Mizelle and Stanley Woodward—of prioritizing MAGA-connected lobbyists and approving lucrative corporate mergers in exchange for lobbying cash. He claims top antitrust cases were swayed by backroom deals, undermining Trump’s own populist agenda and raising hopes that a judicial probe could soon bring the details to light. What will Alford’s revelations mean for antitrust enforcement and DOJ accountability? Adam Beer<p>The Air Canada strike situation is an unmitigated disgrace.</p><p>First of all, getting no pay for mandatory work while the plane is on the ground is <strong>fucking insane,</strong> and it apparently being industry standard practice (which I had no idea of before today) makes it <em>so much worse.</em> Unions explicitly agreeing to it in the past doesn't make that any less true; I dearly hope those unions had <strong>damn</strong> good reasons at the time, because any union worth its salt would know that this is <strong>textbook wage theft,</strong> and sends the message that this type of labour is not valuable. A message that is, of course, a lie, because if it wasn't valuable it wouldn't be mandatory!</p><p>The other prong of this hellscape is that forcing people back to work should <em>never</em> be allowed, in any industry, in any context. Causing economic damage is <em>precisely</em> the purpose of strikes; that's what motivates the company to give the workers what they want. If the company is so big and central to the economy that a strike will significantly damage the entire economy, then that's not a reason to force people back to work; it's a reason to break up the company!</p><p><a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/airCanada" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>airCanada</span></a> <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/airCanadaStrike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>airCanadaStrike</span></a> <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/airlines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>airlines</span></a> <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/antiTrust" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>antiTrust</span></a> <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/business" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>business</span></a> <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/canada" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>canada</span></a> <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/canPol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>canPol</span></a> <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/canPoli" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>canPoli</span></a> <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/CUPE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CUPE</span></a> <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/strike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>strike</span></a> <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/union" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>union</span></a> <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/unions" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>unions</span></a> <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/workers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workers</span></a> <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/workersRights" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workersRights</span></a></p>

Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"So on the one hand, this is all pretty dismal. It also makes the trend towards electing anti-democratic politicians who want to abolish elections a lot easier to understand: if you (correctly) believe you live in a world where politicians don't care about you, then why not vote for a strongman who'll punish your enemies and maybe leave you with a few more crumbs?</p><p>But on the other hand, this is very exciting, because it shows us what a truly democratic world would look like (and just how different that world would be from the billionaire astroturf-dominated social media world)!
