MartinEdic
Just jumping in here for the first time. I’m a Medium writer who writes opinion and observation pieces on US Politics, climate, and current global events. I also have a Substack at martinedic.substack.com called The Grasshopper, A place for writers. Mostly daily posts on Medium, two times a week on Substack plus the occasional extra issue. Martin

MartinEdic
@coachtony You’re the manager. Manage this critical aspect of your platform. Stats are not new tech. There is tons of code out there. No excuse for this incredibly sloppy execution. They are tools for your writers and writers are how you make money or should be.

MartinEdic
@coachtony Could someone fix the stats once and for all? They have no useful data, are very incomplete, do not include measurements for both axis in charts and the Views count in story stats are different on the same page. And they don’t update in real time for new articles. The old stats, a year ago, did most of this. Why would you go backward?

MartinEdic
Does anyone at Medium know just how bad it is trying to write directly in Medium in the browser on an IPad? It’s awful. And don’t tell me to use the app- it’s not much better for composing.

MartinEdic
@coachtony: According to Linda Carroll, she and a group of Medium Boosters (those who recommend articles for boosting) were informed by a Medium staffer that someone had hacked the Medium stats in late September. As far as I can tell there have been no communications with Medium writers regarding what happened and how it affects us. Yet another issue. The lack of clear communications here is troubling.

MartinEdic
Can someone at Medium fix the charts on the story stats pages? The bottom axis has no dates. This is either intentional to whitewash the data or simply a huge UI blunder. Either way it is not right. But I can say that the entire stats revamp is a complete mess that really hurts the writer experience on Medium. I know Tony wants a focus on readers but how are we supposed to provide the content that is the bread and butter without clear data?

MartinEdic
@coachtony What does Medium do, if anything, about a writer who writes articles every day telling people how to make thousands monthly writing for Medium? And then writes an article about how he just hit his peak earnings of $500/month? I know this is not journalism but what about people who blatantly lie in these side hustle articles? This stuff just pollutes the entire site. But I guess it works because this person has thousands of followers. A quandary.

MartinEdic
This morning I scanned the posts of a very popular Medium writer who bragged about hitting one thousand articles. Her list of recents were all versions of the same article written over and over again and published every day. The subject? How she publishes and earns everyday. When will the algos punish this behavior? Or does that crap draw enough readers to be ok? I really want to know. (Disclosure, I I write daily about topical subjects, climate and politics, that are constantly changing)

MartinEdic
The new Medium stats are appallingly awful and appear to be designed to hide what is actually going on. Why would I care about Claps and what relevance do they have to engagement? Anyone can clap without reading and they can clap as many times as they care to click. Meaningless, but they are now the lead stat when you look at the main stats page.

I don’t know who designed this UI but I’d like to hear them tell me why it is an improvement. But that won’t happen.

MartinEdic
Seems obvious to me that Medium is burying Views in the general stats to hide what they are doing with the payment program. My earnings dropped 90%. Sorry, that just looks like a cash grab.

MartinEdic
Goodbye.

MartinEdic
@coachtony I think we need clarity about what Medium thinks is ‘good’ content. I write about politics and climate, two of the most popular topic tags and now it appears my content, which has been read a lot, is no longer wanted.

MartinEdic
@coachtony The new system is doing something terrible to my earnings. With 6000+ followers and a thirty day total of nearly 14000 views, I made $2 yesterday. I have not made less than $20/day in at least two years. This program was supposed to improve the ability of writers to earn from Medium. It also reduced earnings listed for stories earlier this week, earnings I saw as booked for the month, drastically, basically subtracting money. The new stars make comparison impossible. Terrible.

MartinEdic
I hate to rain on the parade but whatever Medium changed with the new Boosted program is not improving anything that I can see. Still oodles of crap and my revenue is way down despite stats being very good in terms of views, read time, read percentage…it makes no sense to this long time Medium writer. I thought the new plans were supposed to reward quality content. I’m not seeing it. @coachtony @medium

MartinEdic
So far the new algorithms for payment appear to be hurting my revenue despite decent amounts of views, reads, and a higher read ratio across the board. Where is the boost? I’m not seeing it.

MartinEdic
@coachtony With the new Boosted guidelines in mind I am conducting a monthlong experiment with writing longer, and I hope, deeper pieces once every week or so. The first one, published last week seems to be doing well. This morning I published a new one. I’m still writing daily on politics and climate but really enjoying these longer pieces which feel more like meditation.
https://martinedic.medium.com/collect-experiences-not-stuff-ac7134f4f634

MartinEdic
My Substack newsletter on writing is reaching 58 countries. Today’s note from @coachtony delineates where Medium Partner Program reaches and it is shocking how many countries it does not. I understand the complexities but this has to change ASAP. We are writing for the planet, not a few elite countries. And these countries and their writers could really use the representation, and the money.

MartinEdic
@coachtony this is my first shot at a story that is more suited to the new Medium recommended standards of being more substantial in both depth and subject matter. About 2000 words. I know the new thing starts August 1 but I put it out there yesterday afternoon and it is getting a decent read ratio, 50%. But it is way too soon to calculate anything as my stuff tends to gather momentum over a few days. But I think I recommend other writers try something similar out.
https://martinedic.medium.com/mapping-out-a-life-in-a-newer-stranger-future-e72d5e948532
