I ate dinner at a local restaurant last night. The owner said they were closing because of #Brexit. Can't get staff, food imports too difficult, electricity costs soaring higher than they did in EU.
There was more -- and in a way more disturbing. She is a Pole with British citizenship who has been here for 30 years. Since Brexit, she says she has experienced a lot of abuse. She never did before. #sad #Brexitbollocks #brokenbritain #crumblingbritain
@jeremygaunt she will be happier and better off. Poland is doing very well. Almost as big economically as the UK now. Poland has prospered. The UK is flying downhill fast. She should come here to Ireland. The people are warm and caring. The economy is growing. Anywhere in Europe is better than broken Britain.
I remember Dame Floella Benjamin telling the Grauniad reporters how after the Brexit vote a middle aged man deliberately ran a trolley into her in a crowded supermarket in South London to "celebrate" the Leave win (and intimidate "her kind").
She is clearly not going to be the only Black British woman in such a space, and only a certain generation would even recognise her from telly, so the man could well have been harbouring his hatred since childhood...
@jeremygaunt In St. Albans there was a nice Brasserie called "Cafe Rouge" I think it is a chain. We tried 5 times to go, but we were told we need a booking and its bookings ONLY. Second time, I went in! Saw an empty brasserie, only 8 tables being served. The fifth time I asked the staff, why they wont take us in, since they have more than enough space. They said they are over their capacity, due to staff shortages after Brexit and then COVID. The brasserie is now shut permanently...

I went to a plant fair recently and met an old friend, an award-winning nurseryman who had similar woes to share. He recounted how the formerly flourishing trade in #plants, #seeds and general #horticultural exchange has not just been made more difficult and expensive but in many cases has literally been stopped dead in its tracks by #Brexit.
