It's wild how much people on Lemmy are hating on Sync for being closed source and having ads by default.

I prefer FOSS too: all of the apps I make are open source, even if they're paid on Google Play. But these are hobbies for me and not my main source of income.

No one is forcing anyone to use Sync; people are just happy it's here for Lemmy because they enjoyed it for Reddit. You don't have to download it and you don't have to buy Pro or Ultra.

Let people enjoy things.

Acting like the developer is some evil corporation just because you can't look at the source code is insane.

Sync doesn't own the Lemmy API, or even any Lemmy instances. Sync being here doesn't force out other apps. It's just another option that people are allowed to use if they want.

Having so many FOSS options is great, but it's disingenuous to pretend that they offer a better experience just because they're FOSS. Many are still pretty janky, with weird flows and broken features.

Community contributors can definitely help fix those issues, but third-party contributions are relatively rare for most projects, and these apps are still really new and unpolished.

Sync is built on years of previous work, so it has a highly polished UI and fluid experience.

This isn't saying the FOSS apps are bad, they're just not as mature, and it's fine for people to want to pay for a more consistent experience.

Hard agree on all of this. Foss-in my experience- is always missing the final polish that would make it enjoyable to use.

As an example, the mastodon app i'm using to type this just erased my message once i opened my . For apps, I reached out to a few devs to see if they're adding tablet/foldable support, and all said it was not in the pipeline.

The experience on is simply better if you have a nice device and want apps to match. (Android != jank)
