We’ve been watching the Watch Duty team do absolutely *unbelievable* technical work all week (they’re members of the Fast Forward open source program that my team at Fastly works on), handling a surge of millions of people trying to see where the LA fires are in real time. Amidst the hopelessness of the fires causing so much destruction, there’s hope in seeing people taking care of each other in this way. There are still people who do such good on the internet. gizmodo.com/watch-duty-hits-1-

Gizmodo · Watch Duty Hits #1 on Apple App Store as Wildfires Rage in CaliforniaGizmodo spoke with the creator of the app that provides vital alerts about evacuations.

@anildash I just now shared the post by @ai6yr EDITED:who is taking a break from his help passing on reports of LA wildfires and asked that the Watch Duty folks step up. Ben has helped so many for so many years, all across the country. Pretty scary.

@anildash @ai6yr THIS is what he's been doing for days, day and night: "That’s when it clicked for Mills. He told Gizmodo it was all about getting emergency radio monitors who had the latest information and pushing what they knew onto an app as reporters."

@cobalt @anildash @ai6yr thoughts with Ben and every one in that valley surrounded by flames, if I read the Watch Duty app correctly. Terrifying state of affairs.

@anildash amazing operation. totally agree. proud they list me as an advisor. they're a real class act.

@anildash It makes me feel even better knowing that folks like Fastly are supporting them. Such a great example of tech being used for good.

@anildash

I doubt the Gazillionaire that owns this burned up house needs Financial help ?
He is no doubt pissed at the people that are not allowed on his private beach did not put out the fire....
When I used to surf those beaches 60 years ago ? No one owned the sand ?
Now ?
Well, maybe they don't either...anymore

@anildash if you know the folks there, might be worth giving them a nudge that their app isn't available on (at least) the Play Store in Canada. Maybe they have a reason, but I can't imagine what that is!

Looks like a really amazing app (and having lived through 3 1/2 weeks of wildfire evacuation this summer, I know how useful this would be!)
