A little digression from me, I reviewed about half a dozen different webcams, including the new one from Opal and Apple's Continuity Camera with an iPhone (probably go with that one!). I've been moderately fixated on webcams for years, so you should go check it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggyeYOMFa-E
@anildash still want to use this sony rx-100 III as my webcam... it's just gathering dust on the shelf because the EVF's kinda busted. I should just get a camlink >_>
@anildash I’ve landed on the iPhone with Continuity, and it works really well.
@anildash I'm also curious about the Insta360 Link. As someone who often moves around during a Meet/Zoom/Teams, the tracking and gestures seem really useful!
@anildash I thought I was going to have to fork out for a secondhand DSLR for an online course I've been teaching, but my old iPhone XR looks great and works seamlessly with Continuity.
@anildash loving the silver in the beard :)
We are all destined to wear jumpers as standard and have a look which is mysteriously different to our icons.
(To be fair, my scribbled cat is 26 years old, and really doesn't look like me anymore).
@anildash Was surprised at how much worse the Opal Tadpole looked versus the C1 tbh.
@anildash the grey streaks on your chin are hot af
@anildash Nerdy detail: the Studio Display “firmware” is up to version 17 not because there have been that many versions, but because the Studio Display is actually an iOS device. So it’s running a fork of iOS 17.0, in the same way tvOS is a fork of iOS. Thankfully they don’t bother updating the Studio Display OS with every 17.x.x update.
@gruber yeah I knew that but realized I said it in a weirdly ambiguous way. I’m still amateur enough at video that it wasn’t worth redoing. The astounding thing is that afaik nobody has jailbroken ASDos, which would yield a pretty incredible touchless iPad, I think.
@anildash Good survey of cameras, by the way.
@anildash This was a useful comparison. I'm curious, though -- the Opal camera both had your lips a bit out of sync with the audio (which wasn't an issue visible with some of the previous cameras). Is that an actual issue with the cameras, or was it just something about the video-editing?
@kemayo oh! I bet it was an editing mistake. I’ll check.
@anildash great webcam comparison, thank you! Which mount did you use for the continuity camera setup!?
@exkclamation oh I had a poorly-rigged selfie tripod for that, it’s not a setup I usually use. I think the MagSafe mounts that sit on a monitor seem cool.
@anildash @exkclamation i'm using the Shawe Gooseneck mount with my Pixel 7A (it works great with my iPhone SE 2020 too) as recommended by the Camo Cam folks: https://reincubate.com/support/how-to/iphone-webcam-mount-guide/#flexible-arms https://www.amazon.com/SHAWE-Phone-Holder-Gooseneck-Mount/dp/B083BRX7D6/ #YMMV I find though although it works great that it's finicky to mount and unmount and will probably buy a dedicated 4K web cam in 2024. Camo Cam works great regardless on macOS (and I assume Windows but I never used it on Windows!).
@anildash @exkclamation oh and i second the emotion :-) that macOS continuity camera works great as well! and perhaps for a lot of people a magnetic mount for their iPhone would work but i use my phone too much and i think it would be too finicky as well! dedicated web cams just work, no futzing around with mounts #ymmv , not everybody can afford a current web cam, etc etc
