Angie Mangino<p>I&#39;m excited to share the second book in my Tottenville History series. 18th Century Tottenville History Comes Alive uses immersive &quot;Imagine&quot; sections that put you directly into historical moments. Angie Mangino<p>New York City&#39;s rapid growth required difficult decisions, including relocating cemeteries to create public spaces. Washington Square Park, Bryant Park, and other beloved locations were once burial grounds. Understanding this history adds depth to how we experience these spaces today—they&#39;re not just parks, but layers of the city&#39;s complex past.<br /><a href="https://me.dm/tags/NYC" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>NYC</span></a> <a href="https://me.dm/tags/UrbanHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>UrbanHistory</span></a> <a href="https://me.dm/tags/NewYork" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>NewYork</span></a> <a href="https://me.dm/tags/CityPlanning" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>CityPlanning</span></a> <a href="https://me.dm/tags/History" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>History</span></a> <a href="https://me.dm/tags/PublicSpaces" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>PublicSpaces</span></a> <a href="https://me.dm/tags/WashingtonSquare" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>WashingtonSquare</span></a><br /><a href="https://www.untappedcities.com/surprise-what-nyc-former-cemeteries-are-now/?ref=daily-newsletter" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">untappedcities.com/surprise-wh</span><span class="invisible">at-nyc-former-cemeteries-are-now/?ref=daily-newsletter</span></a></p>
Angie Mangino<p>October&#39;s Moonstone Musings explores the fascinating connections between Wilkie Collins&#39; The Moonstone and Arthur Conan Doyle&#39;s Sherlock Holmes stories. Jaclyn Lurker traces the detective fiction lineage from the 1868 novel often considered the first full-length English detective novel through to today&#39;s adaptations. Angie Mangino<p>Best part of researching local history? When it comes alive right in front of you.<br />At my 1999 talk, a retired fireman shared his story of battling flames as water pressure failed, residents bringing out milk and juice to help. <br />Then a voice from the audience: &quot;John, is that you? Angie Mangino<p>Patrick Jordan, who died October 2, embodied the Catholic Worker ethos throughout his life. He moved to New York in 1968 to volunteer, met Dorothy Day, and became editor of The Catholic Worker newspaper. Angie Mangino<p>Rockefeller Center commissioned Diego Rivera to paint a lobby mural during the Depression. Rivera created Man at the Crossroads—showing capitalism as corrupt and communism as harmonious. When he refused to change it, they destroyed it. Spanish muralist José Maria Sert replaced it with American Progress: mythological Titans representing labor, three Graces representing art, and Lincoln with his hand on Emerson&#39;s shoulder—thought inspiring action. <br /><a href="https://me.dm/tags/ArtHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ArtHistory</span></a> <a href="https://me.dm/tags/NYC" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>NYC</span></a> <a href="https://me.dm/tags/Murals" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Murals</span></a><br /><a href="https://citybeautifulblog.com/2025/09/29/the-rockefeller-center-artworks-american-progress/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">citybeautifulblog.com/2025/09/</span><span class="invisible">29/the-rockefeller-center-artworks-american-progress/</span></a></p>
Angie Mangino<p>Edgar Allan Poe invented detective fiction, perfected the short story, and wrote &quot; The Raven&quot; in New York City. He walked through Greenwich Village cemeteries with Virginia, finished his only novel on Waverly Place, and spent his final years in a Fordham cottage watching his young wife die of tuberculosis. New York gave him both his greatest triumph and his deepest sorrow. <br /><a href="https://me.dm/tags/Literature" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Literature</span></a> <a href="https://me.dm/tags/NYCHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>NYCHistory</span></a> <a href="https://me.dm/tags/GothicFiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>GothicFiction</span></a><br /><a href="https://citybeautifulblog.com/2025/09/17/edgar-allan-poe-and-new-york-the-city-of-the-raven/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">citybeautifulblog.com/2025/09/</span><span class="invisible">17/edgar-allan-poe-and-new-york-the-city-of-the-raven/</span></a></p>

Angie Mangino<p>Ever heard church bells ring on their own? At St. Mark&#39;s-in-the-Bowery, Manhattan&#39;s oldest site of continuous worship, legend says Peter Stuyvesant&#39;s ghost still paces the aisles. Built in 1799 on the Dutch governor&#39;s farm, this architectural gem layers Georgian, Greek Revival, and Gothic styles into one building. From stolen bodies to phantom hymns, it&#39;s a hidden treasure connecting modern NYC to its colonial past.<br /><a href="https://me.dm/tags/NYCHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>NYCHistory</span></a> <a href="https://me.dm/tags/UrbanExploration" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>UrbanExploration</span></a> <a href="https://me.dm/tags/Architecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Architecture</span></a> <br /><a href="https://citybeautifulblog.com/2025/09/19/st-marks-in-the-bowery-history-mystery-and-ghosts/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">citybeautifulblog.com/2025/09/</span><span class="invisible">19/st-marks-in-the-bowery-history-mystery-and-ghosts/</span></a></p>
Angie Mangino<p>Torquay&#39;s Agatha Christie Festival revealed fascinating connections between Christie and Conan Doyle. Both authors set mysteries on Dartmoor—Doyle heard demon hound stories from a driver named Baskerville, while Christie finished her first novel at The Moorland Hotel.
